Inclusive Health
The SSHJM Inclusive Development Programme aims to ensure that everyone has equal access to healthcare. For many years, the Programme focused on assisting vulnerable communities affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic and addressing its related impacts. However, the Programme has now expanded its efforts to cover a wider range of health concerns. This includes addressing complications related to disabilities and sharing vital information about both communicable and non-communicable diseases, as well as maternal and child health. The Programme provides communities with the knowledge they need to maintain their health. The goal is to make high-quality, inclusive healthcare accessible and affordable, particularly for marginalized groups such as those living in poverty and people with disabilities.
About this theme
Health disparities arise from unfair challenges faced by people with disabilities, including social stigma, prejudice, financial difficulties, and a lack of access to education, job opportunities, and healthcare. Individuals with disabilities might have a life expectancy up to 20 years shorter than those without disabilities. Additionally, they are more likely to live in poverty and nearly seven times as likely to experience unmet basic healthcare needs compared to people without disabilities.
