Climate Resilient
Livelihoods

The SSHJM IDP Zambia support sustainable climate-resilient livelihoods and empower vulnerable households by improving access to food, nutrition and safe water, whilst addressing the climate crisis and its impact on small scale farmers. SSHJM IDP Zambia goal for climate resilient livelihoods is to enhance food security, increase household income, promote better health for individuals and communities  and helping communities protect their local environment by building their resilience against the effects of climate change and environmental degradation. We believe that everyone should have access to sustainable climate climate-resilient livelihoods that can support themselves and their families. To achieve this vision, the SSHJM IDP Zambia is dedicated to helping individuals, households, and communities develop sustainable climate-resilient livelihoods, empowering them, boosting incomes, and improving food production.

About this theme

It is essential to ensure that everyone has access to meaningful employment and sufficient income to maintain a decent standard of living. However, the Zambian government is currently facing challenges in providing enough job opportunities, income, and resources to guarantee food and nutritional security for its citizens. These issues are worsened by factors such as population growth, climate change, land use, water scarcity, and migration. The northern province of Zambia is particularly concerning, as small-scale farming efforts are struggling to meet the province's food requirements. These farmers rely heavily on rainwater for their agricultural activities, making them vulnerable to variations in climate patterns. As a result, this situation has led to harmful agricultural practices and has intensified the negative effects of climate change. Therefore, SSHJM IDP Zambia aligns with Pope Francis' Laudato Si' by addressing the urgent need to respond to "the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor" and to safeguard our common home by empowering communities in sustainable climate-resilient livelihoods.
