In Zambia, the stark contrast between urban and rural living profoundly impacts the survival rates of children. Those born in urban areas typically have better access to health services, leading to healthier lives filled with opportunities for play and growth. In contrast, children born in rural regions face significant challenges, often lacking essential health care and nutritional support during critical developmental stages. Such disparities often stem from the harsh realities faced by mothers in these areas, many of whom struggle to provide for their families and barely survive on less than $2 a day.

This was the reality for Allinani Sichula, a vulnerable 10-year-old boy living in the overspill Compound of Zambia. Raised by his single mother, Ms. Katrine Nachula 26, who is navigating life with four children after her husband abandoned them, Allinani's story is an emotional reminder of the hardships faced by many families.

When Allinani was born, his mother was overwhelmed. “By the time I was pregnant with Allinani, I was struggling to keep up with the required nutrition because my husband left,” she reflected. Juggling the needs of her three children while ensuring a healthy pregnancy took a toll on her ability to access antenatal care. “I missed many clinic visits because I had to prioritize bringing food to the table,” she explained. The consequences were devastating when Allinani was born, he weighed significantly less than a healthy child, and the nurse delivered the heart-wrenching news that he might face lifelong mobility challenges.

In her despair, Ms. Nachula grappled with denial and fear, even questioning if witchcraft had played a role in her son's condition. But hope appeared in a most unexpected way. A caregiver conducting child finding exercise to identify children with disabilities in local communities found her and introduced her to Victor Braun Inclusive School, part of the SSHJM IDP initiative, which offers Inclusive education and specialized care for children with disabilities.

“At first, I couldn’t believe that a place existed that would care for children like mine,” Ms. Nachula shared. However, she eventually visited the school, and the warm welcome she received reignited her faith in humanity. “It was a kind of love and care I had longed for,” she said, recalling how different it felt compared to the indifference from her family since Allinani’s birth

When Allinani first enrolled at Victor Braun Inclusive School, he was placed among the underweight and weak children, often needing to sit with support. His teacher recognised the severity of his condition. “He looked pale and hardly ate, which indicated underlying health issues,” he noted. In response, the school initiated an intensive feeding program, offering nutritious meals like soya beans, milk, smashed potatoes, and beans, all enriched with High Energy Protein Supplements (HEPS).

The transformation in Allinani was remarkable. The headteacher Madama Precious recalls her first encounter with Allinani, “When he arrived at our school, his mother told me he was 7 years old, but based on his appearance, he looked like a 5-year-old child,” With consistent care and adequate nutrition, Allinani began to thrive. He gained weight, regained strength, and slowly but surely started to stretch his hands, which had been stiff when he first arrived.

This journey of resilience, marked by both challenges and triumphs, showcases the profound impact of compassion and community support. With each passing day, Allinani’s story becomes an inspiration, reminding us that with the right resources and love, transformation is possible.

Ms. Nachula’s faith in her son's future has been rekindled thanks to the unwavering dedication of the staff at Victor Braun School. They not only provide education but also nurture hope and the promise of a brighter tomorrow for children like Allinani. Through their efforts, they are turning the tide against malnutrition and neglect, paving the way for a new generation filled with possibilities.
