In the heart of Mbala town in Northern Province in Zambia, a remarkable journey of hope and transformation unfolds at the Victor Braun Special School. Established by the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and Inclusive Development Programme in 2009, this inclusive school in the Mbala District stands as a beacon of empowerment for children with disabilities. At the core of its mission is the belief that disability should never be a barrier to enjoying rights and opportunities in society.

The Victor Braun Special School was established with the fundamental goal of supporting children with multiple disabilities, including conditions such as spina bifida and cerebral palsy, who require assistance to live independently. The school's programs focused on empowering these children by teaching essential skills related to daily living and independence. Additionally, a significant objective of the program was to tackle the high levels of illiteracy that often affect vulnerable and marginalized children.

The school, managed by SSHJM IDP along with the Sisters in Mbala, aims to overcome systemic barriers like gender inequality, poverty, and human rights violations that frequently isolate children with disabilities, limiting their access to health care, education, and developmental opportunities. Victor Braun Special Needs School began its journey with a modest enrollment of 11 children, supported by 8 community-based caregivers and a single trained special needs teacher. Over the years, the school witnessed significant progress in the development of its students, leading to a growth in its enrollment to 49 learners with disabilities. In response to this expansion, the government, through the Ministry of Education, allocated 3 dedicated teachers to support the educational needs of these children. The school faced significant challenges. Yet, fueled by a deep commitment to its mission, it aimed to provide a nurturing environment where children with disabilities could receive high-quality Early Childhood Education and social skills training. With minimal resources, the institution saw its first cohort transform, igniting a spark in the hearts of its students, families, and the community.

The turning point came in 2020, when generous financial support from Misean Cara ignited a wave of transformation. With new educational materials, improved infrastructure, and advocacy for hiring more government teachers, the school blossomed. Today, Victor Braun Special School proudly serves 347 learners, including 168 children with special needs, empowering them to realize their full potential. As children from different backgrounds learn side by side, a remarkable sense of unity and belonging has emerged.
